KEN SHORLEY

A freelance instructor, percussionist and composer based in Nova Scotia Canada, Ken Shorley specializes in the hand drumming traditions of India and the Middle East.

He has studied intensively with South Indian master drummer Trichy Sankaran and orchestral percussionist John Brownell. He has also received training from American frame drum virtuoso Glen Velez and Turkish multi-instrumentalist Faruk Tekbilek.

Ken has been an instructor with Acadia University’s School of Music since 1998, where he teaches world music, gamelan and hand drumming.

As a composer, he has received grants from the Nova Scotia Arts Council, in support of his compositions for string quartet and, most recently, for world drum ensemble.

Ken's music has been featured on CBC radio, at the Atlantic Jazz Festival, Lunenburg Folk Festival, and at Halifax’s annual Drumfest. He has three solo recordings to his credit: Sekar Alit, a collection of new works for gamelan (2008); Nonagon, a multi-layered solo drumming album (2002), and Waterwheel, featuring world percussion, saxophone and cello (1999). Ken's other instructional DVD is called Exploring the Drum - a beginner's guide to learning the darabuka (doumbek) and djembe.
